Iron Fallout on Your Car Paint and Wheels — What It Is and How We Remove It

Run your hand over your bonnet after washing the car. If it still feels gritty or rough — like fine sandpaper — you're feeling contamination that soap and water can't shift. A lot of that is iron fallout, and it's one of the most common things we deal with across Warwickshire, whether it's a daily-driven BMW or a weekend Porsche.

Most owners have no idea it's there until we point it out. So here's exactly what it is, why it matters, and how we get rid of it properly.

What is iron fallout?

Iron fallout is exactly what it sounds like — microscopic particles of iron that land on your paintwork, wheels and glass. It comes from a few sources:

  • Brake dust from your own car and every vehicle around you
  • Rail dust and industrial fallout, especially near busy roads and railway lines
  • Metal shavings kicked up from road surfaces

These particles are hot when they land, so they bond to your paint. Over time they oxidise — that's when you start seeing tiny orange or brown specks, particularly on white and light-coloured cars. On wheels it builds up fast because brakes throw off iron with every stop.

Why it's a problem

Left alone, iron fallout does real damage. Each particle sits embedded in the surface and slowly rusts, and that corrosion works its way into the clear coat. On wheels it eats into the finish and makes them almost impossible to keep clean. It also stops any protection — wax or ceramic — from bonding properly, because you'd just be sealing the contamination underneath.

The gritty feel matters too. If you wash a contaminated car with a normal mitt, you're dragging those hard particles across the paint and creating swirl marks. That's how a lot of the swirl damage we correct starts in the first place.

How we remove it

You can't scrub iron fallout off, and you shouldn't try. We remove it chemically and mechanically as part of our decontamination process.

Chemical decontamination

We spray a dedicated iron remover onto the paint and wheels. It reacts with the iron particles and dissolves them — you'll see it turn purple as it works, which is the chemical bonding to the fallout. It lifts the contamination without any scrubbing, so there's no risk of marring the surface.

Clay decontamination

Once the chemical stage is done, we clay the paint. A clay bar or clay mitt glides over the surface with plenty of lubrication and physically pulls out anything still bonded to the paint — sap flecks, tar, stubborn fallout. After this the paint feels like glass, not sandpaper.

This full decontamination is built into our Deep Clean (from £180), and it's a mandatory first step before any paint correction or coating. There's no point polishing or protecting paint that's still full of embedded iron.

Wheels take the worst of it

Your wheels cop more iron fallout than any other part of the car because they sit right next to the brakes. On a Range Rover or a Mercedes AMG with big brakes, the build-up can be heavy. We treat wheels with the same iron remover, get right into the barrels and around the spokes, and once they're properly clean we can talk about protecting them long term.

A ceramic coating for alloy wheels makes a massive difference here — coated wheels shed brake dust far more easily and a quick rinse keeps them looking sharp. It's one of the best-value bits of protection you can add.

How to keep it from building back up

You can't stop iron fallout entirely — it's part of driving anywhere with traffic and railways, and around Rugby, Leamington and the M6 corridor there's plenty of both. But you can slow it right down:

  • Wash regularly so fallout doesn't get time to oxidise and bond hard
  • Use a proper two-bucket method or let us handle it with a Maintenance Valet (from £80)
  • Protect the paint and wheels with a professional-grade ceramic coating so contamination sits on top rather than bonding in
  • Get a full decontamination done a couple of times a year to reset the surface

Once paintwork is decontaminated and ceramic coated, iron fallout has a much harder time getting a grip — and when you do wash the car, it comes off far more easily.
