How to Maintain a Ceramic Coating (And Make It Last)
If you have invested in a ceramic coating — whether through our New Car Protection Package or Flawless Finish Package — maintaining it correctly is the difference between a coating that looks fantastic at year five and one that is starting to dull at year two.
The good news: maintenance is straightforward. It is mostly about avoiding the things that degrade it and doing the routine washing correctly.
The First 7 Days Are Critical
After a ceramic coating is applied, it goes through a curing process. During the first 7 days: do not wash the vehicle, avoid prolonged exposure to heavy rain if possible, and keep the vehicle away from bird drops and tree sap as much as you can. After 7 days, the coating is fully cured and you can wash as normal.
Correct Washing Is Everything
The number one way people degrade a ceramic coating prematurely is by washing incorrectly.
- Never use an automatic car wash — brushes introduce swirl marks that scratch the coating surface and reduce its effectiveness
- Pre-rinse thoroughly before any contact with the paint — loose grit removed before contact wash means no scratches
- Use a pH-neutral shampoo — avoid alkaline wash products that strip protection layers
- Use a quality wash mitt — microfibre or lambswool, cleaned regularly, never allowed to pick up grit from the floor
- Two-bucket method — one bucket clean soapy water, one bucket rinse water — keep them separate
- Dry with a clean microfibre towel to reduce water spot risk
This is exactly how we wash ceramic coated vehicles in our Maintenance Valet and Maintenance Plus services. Many of our ceramic coating customers put their vehicles on a regular maintenance programme with us to ensure they are always washed correctly.
What to Avoid
- Bird drops — remove as soon as possible. Even a coated surface will eventually suffer if bird drops are left for weeks
- Tree sap — remove promptly with an appropriate sap remover
- Abrasive products — never use cutting compound on a coated surface unless you intend to remove and reapply the coating
Annual Maintenance Check
We recommend an annual inspection of your coating condition. We can assess hydrophobic performance, look for any localised contamination, and advise on whether a light decontamination and topper application is needed. This keeps the coating at peak performance throughout its rated life.
