Tar and Bitumen on Car Paint — Why It Sticks and How We Remove It Safely

Every summer we get the same call. Someone has driven past roadworks or over a freshly surfaced stretch of road, and the lower half of their car is peppered with sticky black specks that will not wash off. That is bitumen — road tar — and it is one of the most common paint problems we deal with across Warwickshire.

What bitumen actually is and why it sticks

Bitumen is the black binder in tarmac. When a road is newly surfaced, or when hot weather softens an existing surface, loose bitumen gets thrown up by tyres onto whatever is behind and beside them. It lands hot, hits your cool paintwork and grips instantly.

It is worst on the areas you would expect: sills, lower doors, rear quarters, front bumper, wheel arches and the backs of wing mirrors. On white and silver cars it is glaringly obvious. On darker cars people often miss it until they run a hand over the paint and feel the roughness.

Why washing will not shift it

Bitumen is not water-soluble. Car shampoo is designed to lift dirt and road film, and it simply slides over tar without touching it. That leads to the mistake we see most: people scrub harder, or attack it with a sponge and a fingernail. Because tar is sticky and picks up grit, scrubbing drags that grit across your clear coat and puts in swirl marks and scratches. You end up with tar and damaged paint.

The other common mistake is reaching for household solvents — white spirit, petrol, nail varnish remover. They may move the tar, but they can also strip wax and sealant, stain plastic trim and rubber, and on some finishes damage the lacquer itself.

How we remove bitumen safely

The safe method is chemistry and patience, not force:

• Wash first. The panel is washed and rinsed so there is no loose grit sitting on the surface to be dragged around.
• Dedicated tar and adhesive remover. A solvent formulated for automotive paint is applied and given proper dwell time. It softens and dissolves the bitumen so it releases rather than being scrubbed off.
• Lift, do not rub. The dissolved tar is lifted away with a clean microfibre, folding to a fresh side constantly so nothing is reintroduced to the paint.
• Clay stage. Any remaining bonded specks are drawn out of the clear coat with clay and plenty of lubrication, leaving the surface genuinely smooth.
• Re-protect. Tar removers are solvents, so they take any wax or sealant with them. The treated area is always re-protected afterwards — skipping this leaves the paint bare.

When tar has been left too long

Fresh bitumen is a straightforward job. Tar that has baked in the sun for weeks is a different story: it hardens, and in some cases it etches into the clear coat. Removing it then reveals a dull mark underneath, and that needs machine polishing rather than more solvent. Where this sits in our work

Tar and bitumen removal is not an add-on for us — it is a standard part of the decontamination stage in our Deep Clean (from £180), and it happens before any correction or coating work. There is no point machine polishing or applying a ceramic coating (from £250) over paint that still has tar bonded to it.

A coating also makes future tar far easier to deal with. It cannot stop bitumen landing on the car, but on a slick coated surface it has much less to grip, and it releases far more easily at the next wash.

If you have driven through fresh tar

Deal with it sooner rather than later — the longer it bakes on, the more likely it is to leave a mark. Do not scrub it, and do not reach for the white spirit.
