Paint Correction vs Valeting — What's the Difference?

24 March 20254 min readBy Josh May — Blue Horizon Detailing

It is one of the most common questions we get asked: what is the actual difference between a valet and paint correction? Both involve working on your vehicle. Both are done by professionals. But the results are completely different — and so is the investment.

What Is a Valet?

Valeting is cleaning. A professional valet removes dirt, grime, and contamination from your vehicle — inside and out. Done properly, it leaves your car looking well-maintained, clean, and fresh.

At Blue Horizon, our valeting range includes:

  • Maintenance Valet (from £80) — the regular upkeep service for vehicles already in good condition
  • Maintenance Plus (from £110) — adds deeper interior cleaning and an exterior protection layer
  • Deep Clean (from £180) — a full reset, recommended as a first visit for any vehicle that has not been professionally cleaned recently

A good valet makes a vehicle look well-cared-for. It will not, however, fix paint defects. Those swirl marks? Still there. The fine scratches in the clear coat? Still there. The hazy, flat appearance of older paintwork? Still there.

What Is Paint Correction?

Paint correction is the process of removing defects from the clear coat using machine polishing. Swirl marks, fine scratches, buffer trails, water spot etching, bird drop marks — all of these live in or on the clear coat, and machine polishing removes a microscopic layer of clear coat to eliminate them.

The result is paint that does not just look clean — it looks genuinely transformed. Gloss levels increase significantly. Reflections become sharp and defined rather than distorted by swirls. The depth and clarity of the paint looks like it did when the car was new, or better.

At Blue Horizon, our paint correction packages are:

  • Enhancement Detail (from £495) — single-stage polish for swirl reduction and gloss enhancement, finished with a quality sealant
  • Refined Correction Package (from £595) — multi-stage machine polish for more significant defect removal
  • Flawless Finish Package (from £745) — maximum defect removal with show-car level clarity, finished with ceramic coating

How Do You Know Which One You Need?

The simplest test: walk around your vehicle in direct sunlight or under artificial lighting and look at the reflection in the paint. If the reflections look clear and sharp, valeting is probably all you need. If you see swirls, scratches, or haziness, that is paint defect — and only correction will fix it.

Another way to think about it: valeting maintains the condition of your paint. Correction improves it.

Can You Have Both?

Absolutely — and in fact most of our detailing packages include both. Every paint correction service starts with a thorough decontamination wash before machine polishing begins. You cannot correct paint properly if it is not clean first.
