Should You Detail Your Car Before Selling? (Yes — Here's Why)
You are getting ready to sell your car. The engine is fine, the service history is in order, the tyres have decent tread. Should you spend money on detailing before the sale?
The short answer is almost always yes — and the numbers tend to back it up.
First Impressions Are Everything in a Private Sale
Buyers make a decision about a car within the first minute of seeing it. A car that looks clean, well-maintained and genuinely cared-for commands more interest and more confidence. A car that is grimy, smells musty, or has swirl marks all over the paint immediately raises questions: if the owner did not bother cleaning it, did they bother with servicing?
A clean car sells faster and typically achieves a better price than the same vehicle presented poorly.
Which Detailing Services Make Sense Before a Sale?
For most vehicles — Deep Clean (from £180)
The Deep Clean is usually the highest-return service for a pre-sale preparation. It transforms the interior and leaves the exterior looking genuinely clean and fresh. For a car valued at £15,000 or more, a £180 investment that can add several hundred pounds to the achievable sale price is straightforward maths.
For prestige vehicles — Enhancement Detail (from £495)
If you are selling a vehicle worth £30,000 or more, the paintwork is going to be scrutinised closely by serious buyers. A single-stage polish to reduce swirls and significantly improve gloss makes the car look markedly better in photographs and in person. An Enhancement Detail from £495 on a car worth £40,000 is an easy decision.
SMART repairs — case by case
If you have obvious bumper scuffs or panel scratches, SMART repair can significantly improve kerb appeal at a lower cost than a traditional bodyshop. Send us photos and we will give you an honest view of whether the repair cost will be recovered in the sale price.
What About the Interior?
Interiors matter enormously to buyers — arguably more than the exterior in many cases. A stained or smelly interior will put buyers off immediately or give them ammunition to negotiate the price down sharply. Part of our Deep Clean is a full strip-down of the interior, fabric extraction or steam clean, leather treatment, and odour treatment where required.
Photography After Detailing
High-quality listing photos of a freshly detailed car make a significant difference to the number of enquiries you receive online. If you are listing on AutoTrader or similar, professional-quality photos of a clean, well-presented car will attract far more serious enquiries than photos of a dirty one.
