Ceramic Coatings: The Truth — Good, Bad and What to Expect

Ceramic coatings get an enormous amount of hype in the car detailing world. Some of the marketing claims made by brands and detailers are legitimate. Some are exaggerated. Some are outright misleading. As a GTechniq-certified installer, we would rather give you the honest version of what ceramic coating actually does — and what it does not — than promise you something we cannot deliver.

What a Ceramic Coating Actually Does

• Hardness and scratch resistance — A quality ceramic coating (we use GTechniq Crystal Serum Light, rated 9H) is significantly harder than clear coat alone. This means it resists fine scratches and swirl marks from washing far better than unprotected paint. It will not make your car scratch-proof, but it will make it considerably more scratch-resistant.
• Chemical resistance — Coated paint is far more resistant to bird drop etching, tree sap, road salt, industrial fallout and other chemical contaminants.
• Hydrophobic performance — Water sheets and beads off coated paint dramatically better than unprotected paint. This makes the car easier to clean, reduces water spot risk, and looks genuinely impressive.
• UV protection — Ceramic coatings slow paint fade and oxidation from UV exposure significantly.
• Durability — A professionally applied GTechniq Crystal Serum Light has a rated durability of 5 years with correct maintenance. Compare that to a quality wax at 8-12 weeks.
• Enhanced gloss — A ceramic coating amplifies the depth and clarity of the underlying paint, particularly after paint correction.

What a Ceramic Coating Does Not Do

• It is not scratch-proof — Keys, stone chips and sharp objects will still damage a coated car. It is scratch-resistant, not scratch-proof. Anyone telling you otherwise is not being straight with you.
• It is not self-healing — Professional-grade coatings like Crystal Serum Light do not self-heal in any meaningful sense. PPF can self-heal minor marks with heat; ceramic coatings cannot.
• It is not maintenance-free — A coated car still needs washing. It still needs bird drops removed promptly. The maintenance is easier and less frequent than unprotected paint, but it is not zero.
• It will not fix paint defects — Swirl marks, scratches and defects in the paint will still be visible through the coating — and in some cases amplified by the increased gloss. Paint correction must be done before coating to achieve the best result.
• It is not forever — Crystal Serum Light is rated at 5 years with correct maintenance. Beyond that, the coating should be assessed for reapplication.

The Cost Reality

Our New Car Protection Package starts from £675, which includes the light enhancement polish and GTechniq Crystal Serum Light on the paintwork. Our Flawless Finish Package from £745 combines maximum paint correction with ceramic coating.

Consumer-grade DIY ceramic coatings are available for much less. However, the application process is far more demanding than it looks, and errors during application can be extremely difficult to fix without professional help. For a vehicle worth £20,000 or more, professional application is always the right call.

The Bottom Line

Ceramic coating, properly applied with genuine professional products, is genuinely excellent protection. It protects better, lasts longer, and makes maintenance easier over the years. But it is not magic, it is not maintenance-free, and it will not fix problems in the paint that were there before application.
