Water Spots on Car Paint — What Causes Them and How We Remove Them

Water spots are one of the most common problems we get asked about across Rugby and the wider Warwickshire area. You wash your car, dry it, and there are still faint rings and dots dotted across the paint, glass and even the wheels. You go over them again with a cloth and they don't budge. That's because water spots aren't dirt sitting on the surface — they're mineral deposits, and in the worst cases they've etched into the clear coat itself.

Here's what actually causes them, why they're so stubborn, and how we deal with them safely.

What causes water spots

When water lands on your paint and dries in place, the water itself evaporates but everything dissolved in it stays behind. Tap water in Warwickshire carries dissolved minerals — mainly calcium and magnesium — along with whatever else it picks up. When that droplet dries, it leaves a tiny ring of concentrated mineral deposit exactly where it sat.

The usual culprits we see are:

• Sprinklers and garden hoses — a lawn sprinkler that catches the car every morning is one of the worst offenders
• Rain drying in hot sun — light rain followed by strong summer sun bakes the droplets in place
• Washing in direct sunlight — the car dries before you can get to it with a towel
• Sea air and hard water on trips away, then left to dry on the drive

Why they're worse in summer

Heat is what turns a harmless water spot into a real problem. On a warm panel, water evaporates fast and the minerals concentrate quickly. Worse than that, the mineral deposit can actually etch a small crater into the clear coat — a physical mark, not just a stain sitting on top. Once that happens, wiping and rewashing will never remove it, because there's a dent in the surface where the deposit was.

This is why we see so many water spot enquiries between May and September. A car parked under a tree near a sprinkler in Leamington or Kenilworth can pick up hundreds of etched marks over a single hot spell.

The two types of water spots

Surface deposits (Type 1)

These are mineral deposits bonded to the surface but not yet etched into it. They feel slightly rough and often show as chalky white rings. Caught early, these can usually be removed with the right acidic cleaning process during a thorough wash and decontamination.

Etched spots (Type 2)

These have physically eaten into the clear coat, leaving a shallow crater. No cleaner on earth will fill that back in. The only proper fix is machine polishing to level a fraction of clear coat down to the base of the etch, restoring a flat, clear surface.

How we remove them

We start every job with a proper wash and decontamination. Our Deep Clean (from £180) strips off surface-bonded deposits along with everything else clinging to the paint, and for a lot of cars that alone clears the lighter water spots.

Where the spots have etched in, washing won't touch them, and that's where machine correction comes in. Our Enhancement Detail (from £495) uses machine polishing to remove the etched marks and bring back a flat, glossy surface. For heavily marked paint with lots of deep etching alongside swirls, the Refined Correction Package (from £595) goes further and corrects the paint properly across the whole car.

Water spots aren't only a paint problem, either. Glass gets etched just as badly, and windscreens covered in mineral spots can be a nightmare to see through in low sun. We treat the glass as part of the process too.

How to stop them coming back

Once we've cleared the spots, the best defence is a proper protective coating. A professional-grade ceramic coating makes the surface far more water-repellent, so droplets bead up and roll off rather than sitting flat and drying in place. It also makes any deposits that do form far easier to wipe away before they can bond.

Beyond the coating, a few simple habits help:

• Never let the car dry in the sun after washing or rain
• Dry it off with a clean microfibre towel rather than leaving it to air dry
• Move it away from garden sprinklers
• Deal with spots quickly — a fresh deposit is far easier to remove than a baked-on one
