What Is Paint Correction? Everything You Need to Know
Paint correction is a term that gets thrown around a lot in the car detailing world, but there is a lot of confusion about what it actually is, how it works, and how to tell if you need it. This is our straightforward guide to paint correction — no fluff, just the facts.
What Is Paint Correction?
Paint correction is the process of removing defects from the clear coat of your vehicle paint using a machine polisher. The defects being removed include:
- Swirl marks — the circular scratches you see in sunlight, usually caused by incorrect washing
- Fine scratches — from brushes, tree branches, poor drying technique
- Buffer trails — left by previous machine polishing done incorrectly
- Water spot etching — where mineral deposits in water have bonded with or etched into the clear coat
- Bird drop etching — where bird droppings have chemically burned into the surface
- Light oxidation — where the clear coat has started to dull and fade from UV exposure
Paint correction removes these defects by carefully polishing away a microscopic layer of clear coat to a level below the defects. What you are left with is a perfectly smooth, defect-free surface that reflects light cleanly — producing the deep, sharp gloss that makes corrected paint look so dramatically different.
What Does the Process Involve?
- Thorough pre-wash and decontamination — including iron fallout removal and clay bar treatment to ensure the surface is completely clean before machine polishing begins
- Paint thickness measurement — using a paint depth gauge at multiple points to ensure we never polish beyond safe limits
- Machine polishing — using rotary or dual-action polishers depending on the stage and required correction level
- IPA panel wipe — isopropyl alcohol removes polishing oils so we can inspect the true paint condition under proper lighting
- Protection application — sealant, wax or ceramic coating to protect the corrected paint
Single-Stage vs Multi-Stage Correction
Not all paint correction is the same. A single-stage polish used in our Enhancement Detail (from £495) reduces swirls and improves gloss significantly — it is about a meaningful visual improvement rather than removing every last defect.
Multi-stage correction in our Refined Correction Package (from £595) and Flawless Finish Package (from £745) uses a heavier cutting compound first, then progressively finer polishes to refine and perfect the finish. This achieves much higher levels of defect removal — often 80-95% correction of all visible defects.
Does Your Car Need Paint Correction?
The quick test: park your car in direct sunlight and look at a panel from a low angle. If you see circular swirling patterns in the paint, you have swirl marks. If you see hazy, flat reflections rather than sharp, clear ones, your paint has defects that correction will address.
Almost every vehicle over 18 months old will have some degree of swirling from washing. Vehicles that have been through automatic car washes regularly are typically in significantly worse condition. Dark colours show defects most clearly — but all paint colours benefit from correction.
