Why Jet Washing Your Own Car at Home Can Do More Harm Than Good

A jet wash looks like the perfect shortcut. Point, pull the trigger, watch the dirt fly off. For a lot of drivers around Rugby and the wider Warwickshire area, a pressure washer bought from a DIY store is the main tool they reach for on a Sunday morning. The problem is that most of the damage a jet wash causes doesn't show up straight away — it builds up over months, and by the time you notice the swirls and dull paint, the harm is already done.

We're not saying pressure washers are useless. We use one every day. The difference is how it's used, what comes before and after it, and knowing where it should never be pointed. Here's what actually goes wrong when a car is jet washed the wrong way.

Grinding grit into your paint

The biggest mistake isn't the jet wash itself — it's what people do next. A quick blast, then straight in with a sponge or a brush while the car is still covered in road film and grit. Every particle of dirt on that paint is harder than the clear coat sitting underneath it. Drag a sponge across it and you're effectively sanding your own car. That's exactly how the fine cobweb swirls appear, the ones you only see in direct sunlight or under lights at a petrol station.

A pressure washer should be used to lift and rinse dirt away before anything touches the surface. On its own it won't remove bonded contamination, but it clears the loose grit so the contact washing that follows does far less damage. Skip that stage and no amount of careful wiping saves the paint.

Where the water goes matters

Modern cars are full of places you really don't want to force pressurised water into. Get too close with the lance and you can push water past door and window seals, into wiring connectors, through boot and bonnet gaps, and behind trim that was never designed to take a direct jet. On older or classic cars it's worse — think a BMW E30 convertible with perished seals, or the soft top on any convertible.

We see it regularly: water sitting in door cards, damp footwells that start to smell, and electrical gremlins that the owner never connects back to the jet wash. Soft tops are especially vulnerable. Blasting a fabric roof at close range strips out its protective coating and can force water straight through the weave. Alloy wheels and brakes

Wheels take the most abuse, so people naturally blast them hardest. Fair enough — but a jet wash alone won't shift baked-on brake dust and iron fallout. Those particles bond to the surface and need a proper decontamination treatment to release safely. Firing a lance at the wheels also drives water and dirt deep into brake components and behind the spokes where it sits and corrodes.

The other common damage

• Stone chips made worse — a close, hard jet on the leading edge of a bonnet or bumper can lift the edges of existing chips.

• Failed sealant and wax — too much pressure and heat strips off whatever protection was on the paint, leaving it exposed.

How to jet wash properly if you're doing it yourself

If you're going to use one at home, a few simple rules make a real difference. Keep the lance at least a foot from the paint. Never use the narrow, high-pressure nozzle on bodywork — a wide fan pattern is far kinder. Apply snow foam first and give it time to soften the dirt before you rinse. And never touch the paint with a sponge or brush until every bit of loose grit has been rinsed clear.
